For fans of the middleweight supersport class, the last few years have been rough. They’ve had to watch the segment shrink drastically, with multiple 600 cc machines being retired in favor of bigger, more versatile road oriented models. To its credit, Kawasaki has kept the ZX-6R as a staple of its middleweight lineup through the years, however it has been dropped from the lineup in some markets over the last few years due to emissions standards. Stop-sale and “do not ride” notices issued for 2024-2026 models due to crankshaft bearing concerns created further concern that the model’s days may be numbered.
There is now reason to rejoice as Kawasaki announced its return to the US market for 2027. The agile model will be available in ABS and non-ABS variants, slotting into the lineup essentially unchanged.
When the ZX-6R returned to the lineup in 2013 after a brief hiatus, the lively sportbike earned its spot as a favorite of street riders and track day junkies alike with its larger 636 cc cylinder capacity. For 2027, the song remains mostly the same. The punchier engine, aluminum perimeter frame and high-quality suspension package coupled with supersport-grade brake management make the bike equally at home on track or road.
As we’ve noted, the ZX-6R is not technically a 600, as its long-stroke, larger-displacement 636 cc mill delivers a more robust midrange than is typical of the class. The engine received some upgrades in 2024 to comply with Euro 5+ emissions rules but is otherwise unchanged this year. The motor makes a claimed 127 hp that hits at 13,000 rpm and 52 lb-ft of torque coming at 10,800 rpm. Meanwhile, the rest of the ZX-6R’s component list is nicely suited to track days. The 41 mm inverted Showa SFF-BP fork offers rebound and compression damping and spring preload adjustability, and the Uni-Track rear shock adjustable for compression damping, rebound damping, and spring preload.

The binders mean business too, with dual semi-floating 310 mm discs gripped by radial-mounted monobloc four-piston calipers upfront (aided by Kawasaki’s Anti-lock Brake System on the higher-spec model). You get single 220 mm petal discs with a single caliper out back.
All that rolls on 17 in wheels shod with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tires for plenty of grip in a variety of riding conditions. With a 55.1 in wheelbase, 32.7 in seat height and 436 lb. wet weight (for the ABS model), the ZX-6R’s proportions should tick the boxes for a fairly wide range of body types and riding styles.
Upping the ante further is the ZX’s expansive electronics package, which includes four ride modes (Sport, Road, Rain, and a customizable Rider mode). The six-speed transmission gets help from an assist and slipper clutch as well as a quickshifter (upshifts only). There’s also three-level adjustable traction control to keep things in check. All the new tech is managed by a color 4.3 in TFT display that allows access to smartphone connectivity via the Rideology app.
The latest ZX-6R also wears slightly refined bodywork that is more clearly matched to its Ninja heritage, featuring revised front and side cowls and updated, compact LED headlights that create a more modern look.

The current-generation ZX-6R is one of just three inline-four 600 cc sportbikes left in the US market. If you’re looking to buy new, your only other options are the Honda CBR600RR and Suzuki GSX-R 600. The Aprilia RS 660 and Triumph Daytona 660 could be seen as viable alternatives, but they’re bigger and also more expensive.
The 2027 Kawasaki ZX-6R has already been posted on Kawasaki’s U.S. website, and interested buyers can choose from four color options for the ZX-6R non-ABS model: Lime Green, Galaxy Silver, Metallic Matte Twilight Blue and Metallic Spark Black/Metallic Flat Spark Black. The pricier ABS model comes in three colorways, including Lime Green, Metallic Matte Twilight Blue and Metallic Spark Black/Metallic Flat Spark Black.

MSRP for the non-ABS base model is $11,599, with the ZX-6R ABS retailing for $12,599, which is the same price as the outgoing 2026 model. 2027 models will be in dealer showrooms by the end of the month.
