Indian Motorcycle Unveils Limited-Edition Chief Vintage for Sturgis Rally
Not to be outdone by the unveiling of the Harley-Davidson Deadwood special edition last month, Indian Motorcycle has unveiled a new South Dakota themed limited-edition model of its own. Introduced during the 86th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the 2026 Indian Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition was designed to commemorate the riders who first congregated in the Black Hills nearly 90 years ago.
Indian Motorcycle Roots in Sturgis
The Sturgis rally traces its origins to 1938, when a local Indian Motorcycle dealer named Clarence “Pappy” Hoel and a group of Indian riders organized a gathering centered on racing, scenic riding, and camaraderie around a shared lifestyle. The inaugural event named the Black Hills Classic reportedly brought together nine riders and approximately 200 spectators.
That small gathering eventually grew into what is now recognized as the world’s largest motorcycle rally. The new Chief Vintage is designed to recognize and commemorate that history.
Retro-Inspired Styling
The Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition features a two-tone Indian Motorcycle Red and Cream paint scheme inspired by the motorcycles of the 1930s. A multi-colored Indian Motorcycle headdress logo adorns the tank, recreating the renowned treatment from the era. A number 56 on the side plate pays tribute to the hand-painted racing numbers used by the original competitors at the early races. Notable highlights also include the classic valanced fenders, wire-spoke wheels, vintage handlebars and espresso solo seat.
The limited-edition Chief Vintage also features serialized badging numbered from 1 to 125, commemorating Indian Motorcycle’s anniversary and identifying each model in the production run.
Features and Specifications
The Chief Vintage is meant to blend classic American cruiser styling with contemporary electronics. The Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition uses Indian Motorcycle’s air-cooled Thunderstroke 116 V-twin engine. Performance is unchanged as the powerplant produces 85 hp and 120 lb-ft. of torque, complemented by three selectable ride modes: Tour, Standard, and Sport.
Limited Availability
Acknowledging the 125th anniversary of Indian Motorcycle, only 125 examples of the Chief Vintage Sturgis, SD Edition will be available. The model is now shipping to Indian Motorcycle dealerships with a starting price of $23,999. That’s a $4,000 premium over the base Chief Vintage (and $3,500 more than the Indian Red model), but $1,000 less than the Chief Vintage 125th Anniversary Edition.
