Mecum Auctions kicked off its 35th Annual Vintage and Antique Motorcycle Auction at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada today. It’s always a good barometer to see how the industry is doing overall, as well as what specific models are gaining attention and increasing in value for your own bike-buying research.

This Year’s Notable Bikes And Collections
Mitzel Builders Motorcycle Collection
At last year’s Vegas auction, Lee Mitzel offered his first collection of restored motorcycles in an effort to reduce his stockpile of more than 500 bikes, many of which are significant in their heritage and/or history. The trend continues this year as Mitzel Builders offers up another significant collection of more than 180 motorcycles, including a Kawasaki Z1 900 “The King,” a Honda CB750, a Honda NRX1800 Rune, a vintage Harley-Davidson 1942 Military Model WLA, and a 1936 New Imperial Model 30.
The Richard M. McEnally Collection
Featuring 150 motorcycles from the late Richard M McEnally’s stable, the collection features motorcycles from all over the world, including a British 1961 BSA Gold Star Catalina, a 1963 Rocket Gold Star Scrambler, a 1963 Matchless G85CS, a 1956 Sunbeam Model 8, a 2001 BMW R1200C, and a selection of seven Triumph’s including a 1957 TRW, a 1966 and 1969 T-120R, a 1954 Thunderbird, a 1959 Triumph Bonneville, and a 1951 TR5. From Italy, the collection offers a 1960s-era Benellis, two Ducati MKIIIs, and a selection of 1980s Moto Guzzis. From Japan, a vintage 1989 Honda GM500 TT, five Suzukis and a pair of Yamahas, including a 1980 XT 500. From the United States, a gathering of Harley-Davidsons including a 1958 ST, and a 1968 Rapido, as well as a 1966 Steen Alsport and a 1973 Muskin El Gato. His Spanish bikes include a wide range of Bultacos, a pair of Matadors, including a 1972 Alpina and a TSS125 Racer. The collection also offers a 1965 Jawa Type 354 from the Czech Republic and a pair of Swiss-built Condors from 1953 and 1975.
The Maurice Candy Collection
Perhaps not a well-known name in racing circles, Maurice Candy enjoyed riding for the sheer thrill and didn’t collect a vast majority of podium visits. However, he did compete in some major events, including the 1956 Isle of Man TT Clubman’s TT, finishing in 16th Along the way, Candy collected a wide variety of vintage bikes that will be up for auction in Vegas, including a pair of coveted Vincent-HRD Series A models, a 1938 Comet and a 1938 Rapide. His trove will also include a 1938 Velocette KTT MK, a 1948 Garden Gate Manx, a 1961 DOHC Manx, and a Tickle T5 Manx Replica Racer. It also includes several Nortons, including a 1948 Garden Gate International, a 1956 BSA DBD34 Gold Star, a 1969 Lightning, a 1946 Ariel 4G MkII Square Four, as well as a 1968 BMW R69S with sidecar.
Other notable mentions and oddities not to be missed are the 1988 Pulse AutoCycle, the only Bill Warner land speed racing motorcycle in existence, and the 1968 CB750 prototype. Not to be confused with the four pre-production CB750s sent to Honda’s annual Dealer Convention in Las Vegas in 1969, this is a one-of-a-kind machine that was built entirely by hand.
