Big Bikes, Bigger Hearts: Riding Clubs That Give Back
Outlaw gangs and the image of the big, hairy biker have long been common public perceptions of the motorcycle culture. The reality, however, is that many motorcycle riding clubs (known as RC’s) are known for their positive philanthropic and charitable endeavors. As the holiday season begins, Cycle Trader is sharing some of the ways that these groups give back to their communities, and how you can do the same.

Charitable Motorcycle Groups
Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (BACA) is a collective of motorcycle riders committed to creating a safe environment for children and protecting them from harm. Working with local and state officials, BACA not only intervenes in situations of child abuse but also provides physical and emotional support for children during court appearances.
Domestic animals are abused every 10 seconds in the United States. Bikers Against Animal Cruelty is an organization that hosts events and rides that raise awareness and funds to prevent it, while also supporting the victims of this abuse and neglect.
BAB is a nonprofit organization created by bikers, but not limited to bikers, that is committed to generating awareness and providing education resources for both children and adults on the benefits of living in a society of respect and self-empowerment. They host local events and raise funds to support a variety of initiatives, as well as acting as ambassadors and liaisons when needed.
Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club
The Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club is a Black motorcycle club named after the historic African American U.S. Army regiments who served after the Civil War. The group gives back to the community through charity work and youth mentorship. With chapters across the country, the Buffalo Soldiers MC helps feed the homeless, partners with various organizations like Habitat for Humanity to build homes for families in need, and provides scholarship support to graduating seniors.
Bikers for Books (B4B) is a network of motorcycle riders and reading enthusiasts who work to raise reading awareness. This federally recognized non-profit organizes fundraising efforts to support schools and provide adequate reading materials. B4B offers free assemblies at local schools and raises money through donations, sponsorships, merchandise sales and motorcycle runs.
Founded by two bikers in 2011, Pennsylvania-based nonprofit Justice Rescue is dedicated to rescuing animals from abuse and neglect. The group takes in and rehabilitates thousands of animals, providing them with a safe space to live before they find their forever homes. The group relies on donations and volunteers to help care for these animals and facilitate adoptions. Justice Rescue also sells clothing and accessories that you can wear while you ride your motorcycle.
Ways Your Club Can Give Back
There are several ways motorcycle enthusiasts can raise money and awareness for causes you care about.
Charity Rides
Charity rides are a longstanding way for motorcycle riders to raise money for a good cause. These charity rides can be easy to organize, by simply collecting money from participating riders who can then ask their friends and family for donations.
If you don’t want to organize your own charity ride, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) hosts hundreds of sanctioned events each year, all across the country. If you’re an AMA member, you can join other members and take part in these events to raise money for people in need.
Poker Runs
Poker runs are another popular way for motorcycle riders to fundraise, combining a charity ride with some friendly competition. Organizers establish five checkpoints along a route. As everyone rides to each checkpoint, players draw a single card and place bets at each stop. At the last stop, riders draw their last card and the player who has the best hand wins. The proceeds collected from each bet are donated to a charity of your group’s choice. Winners can choose from prizes that have been donated by local businesses.
Motorcycle clubs can support Meals on Wheels, a community-based program dedicated to addressing senior hunger and isolation, by delivering on their bikes. You can sign up to volunteer online and then you’ll be connected with a provider in your community.
While bikers share a love of motorcycles, many also bond over their favorite charitable causes. Compassion and camaraderie can share the same road and make an impact along the way.
