Advanced Rider Assistance Systems
When it comes to improved rider safety, motorcycle manufacturers are developing cutting-edge advanced rider assistance systems. These go beyond anti-lock braking systems and offer features like electronic stability control, adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, collision alert with automatic braking, and more.
KTM’s adaptive cruise control was developed in collaboration with Bosch. This system was designed to reduce the need for manual adjustments, adding functionality like distance assist, automatic start and stop, and brake assist.
Other examples of these types of systems include BMW’s automatic stability control, which eliminates rear wheel spin and makes power transfer more efficient. This improves rider safety, especially in poor weather conditions. According to the brand, this is one of the most popular factory-installed optional accessories available for newer models.
Self-Balancing Motorcycles
Another type of rider assistance technology being heavily researched is self-balancing motorcycles. Imagine being able to confidently mount your motorcycle, or rest at a stop light, without tilting to one side or the other. Manufacturers are developing self-balancing motorcycles that can make riding more accessible to new riders, those with a shorter inseam. or physical challenges.
Honda’s newest Rider Assist technology features self-balancing capabilities that will keep the bike upright when stationary, whether you’re on it or not. While this tech isn’t available just yet, Honda has been testing it on the Gold Wing.
Yamaha is also developing self-balancing technology that has the added bonus of voice control. According to a press release, saying “Motoroid, stand up” or gesturing, signals the bike to stand upright. This tech utilizes Yamaha’s exclusive Active Mass Center Control System to recognize the rider’s face and gestures, along with haptic human-machine interface to facilitate non-verbal communication between the rider and the bike.
Improved Connectivity
Manufacturers are integrating connectivity more and more into every new model they release. Improved smartphone integration can reduce distraction and create a safer riding experience. In certain models, riders are even able to manage their bike’s different riding modes through dedicated apps.
When these technologically advanced motorcycles need software updates, you won’t even need to take them into a dealership or to a mechanic to perform this service. Software updates can be made over-the-air (OTA) and pushed to the bike’s system wirelessly.
AI-Assisted Navigation
Artificial intelligence is quickly becoming integrated into virtually every area of technology and innovation, including your next motorcycle’s navigation system. This is more than simple GPS capability. AI-assisted navigation can provide real-time route optimization and hazard alerts, increasing efficiency and safety. Some of these systems even offer voice command, allowing riders to alter routes hands-free.
Alternative Propulsion Solutions
Electric motorcycles have been in development for years, and a number of manufacturers are bringing new, more efficient models into development. Range is increasing while charge times and prices are slowly coming down to more attainable levels. Brands such as Zero, LiveWire, and Ducati have developed—and continue to develop—bikes for the street and racetrack that prove electric motorcycles will become a more viable option in the future.
