KTM’s New AMT System Will Pave the Way for a Clutchless Future

KTM has officially announced the launch of their new Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) system, set to debut on select 2025 models. With this system ready for production, KTM enters the competition against Honda’s long-standing Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT), which has already surpassed 200,000 units sold; BMW’s Automated Shift Assistant (ASA) on the GS models; and possibly Yamaha’s upcoming Y-AMT system.

The new technology is another advent from the major motorcycle manufacturer, as KTM recently announced the 1390 Super Duke GT will enter production. While details on additional models remain under wraps, it’s likely that KTM’s flagship adventure and touring bikes will be the first to receive the update, as they are due for a refresh. How the AMT Works 

The AMT shifts gears via an electromechanical actuator that controls the shift drum. This results in gear changes in just 50 milliseconds.

Riders can choose between fully automatic or manual modes, with gear changes either through the foot shifter or handlebar-mounted paddles. Although manual mode offers control over gear selection, the absence of a clutch lever may disappoint purists who prefer the fine control it provides.

KTM claims that the AMT simplifies riding in various challenging situations, especially on larger bikes. Shifting behavior is integrated with ride modes, allowing users to adjust it to their preferred riding style and conditions.

Unlike traditional motorcycle gearboxes, the AMT has a P – N – 1 – 2 – 3 – 4 – 5 – 6 sequence, with P representing Park, and N representing Neutral. Both Park and Neutral can only be selected via paddle shifters, whether or not the engine is running. To engage first gear, either the front or rear brake must be applied.

KTM has stated that the AMT gearbox has been designed to maintain traditional dimensions, with only a small amount of weight added.
