DescriptionThose who keep a close eye on our website might be feeling some déjà vu right now. That’s because this same beautiful classic R75/6 was shown here a little more than a year ago. It was sold, of course, but its owner never got the chance to ride and enjoy it as he’d hoped. He rode it only 880 miles, and well… it’s here again. We are hopeful that someone able and eager to fully appreciate this fine machine will come forward to claim the honor of riding this prized classic long into the future.Re-posted below, nearly verbatim, is the description Bob wrote for this bike last year. Other than the low number of additional miles, nothing at all has changed on this motorcycle.True classic BMW’s are finished in Avus Black paint with hand applied white pinstripes. From 1923 until roughly 1968 BMW followed Henry Ford’s marketing policy of “any color you want as long as it’s black,” except for the military and police who always got special consideration. In 1969 a very limited number of bikes were available in other colors, then in 1970 with the introduction of the /5 Series, metallic paints in an array of colors became commonplace; so much so that it became hard to obtain a BMW painted in Avus Black with white pinstripes despite demand from the faithful. And to this day, BMW has sprayed that original and classic color sparingly on its motorcycles. Even the very last 1,000 cc airhead ever built by BMW, the R100R, did not get painted in Avus Black. It was done in what became known as Classic Black which has a hint of gray or silver in it and a slight metallic base. (You can see this machine on display at Bob’s BMW. It’s documented as the very last one built in the world and is still in the original shipping crate.)

Very good condition and well sorted with 56,036 original miles.  Introduced in 1969, the 745cc R75 /5 was the biggest motorcycle in BMW’s new line of /5 models that also included the 498cc R50/5 and 599cc R60/5. Often considered more evolutionary than revolutionary, the new /5s were in fact a bit of both. While they retained BMW’s traditional boxer engine configuration (so named because the pistons of the horizontally opposed twin appear to “box” each other as the crankshaft spins) and shaft final drive, the /5s were significantly improved over their earlier brethren. Where previous BMWs were kickstart only, the new /5 had Bosch electric starters (optional on the R50 /5). Breaker points and a pair of 6-volt coils replaced the previous magneto system, and charging was by a brushless alternator instead of the generator found in previous models. Better yet, the new alternator put out a whopping 180 watts, a 50 percent higher output than most other bikes then on the market. Although purists were a bit uncertain about the revised Beemers, newcomers to the Bavarian fold embraced the new bikes. Although not as fast as a contemporary Norton 850 Commando, the R75 /5 was faster than it looked, posting quarter-mile times in the high 13-second range and a top speed close to 110mph. It would tour effortlessly at 80mph all day long, returning 50mpg in the process, and it handled well, too, as capable on a two-lane back road as it was on the super slab.We ship bikes weekly! This is my black 1971 BMW R75/5, matching numbers with factory BMW hard side cases. The Bike was purchased in September 2013 from Nicholas Woodbury, one of the principals at the Classic Bike Experience in Essex, VT.  This bike did not fall under their charter (focus on British bikes) so it was sold directly by Nick to me.  The VIN is 2976772, where 2476 were made that year and this one was built in January of 1971.  Upon purchase, I replaced all the cables, brakes, and serviced the engine.  It had the starter replaced last year but has not needed work other than routine maintenance.  It has 62,200 miles +/- and the bike starts and runs well. It is a very good riding machine, but not a showpiece.  That said, it is rust free and cosmetically good.  It does have some scratches on the tank near the seat that will need to be touched up but otherwise it is in very good condition.  I do have a box of spare parts that go with the bike including a spare rear end with good spindles for the future when it needs to be replaced.Happy to take any additional photos if you have a specific requests.  Note the photos have a few from the day I purchased it in 2013 and some more recent photos.  As you can see the condition is the same as when purchased, and the mechanicals have been well maintained.

I am the 2nd owner of this vintage R-75/5. I did a frame-up 100% restoration with everything new or zero-timed. It has a toaster tank and is a short wheel base.  Everything is stock as it came from BMW with only 37,500 miles. Granada red. I'm simply getting too old to ride it anymore.Photos on request
