HOW TO FINANCE YOUR MOTORCYCLE

Congratulations on your decision to get your dream bike! There's nothing quite like the adrenaline rush its streamlined speed can provide. But why spend weeks picking out the perfect model, only to haphazardly settle for just any lender's financial terms?

There's a lot more to a loan than its interest rate, and making the wrong financing decision might cost you hundreds later. Before you sign on the dotted line, here's a helpful list of questions to consider.

Does the lender offer motorcycle loans?

It might seem like an obvious question, but not everyone offers bike loans. Before you waste any valuable time, make sure you clarify this right away.

Is a down payment required?

Many lenders require some serious cash up front. Others don't require a down payment at all. Shop accordingly.

Are there any hidden fees?

Some lenders will try to load you up with hidden costs at the last minute. Be sure to ask for a full list of the company's fees up front.

Are there any refinancing fees?

Refinancing isn't just for homes. If you should later spot a better deal for your bike, you don't want to worry about hefty refinancing charges. Ask about the lender's policy on this before you sign.

Are there any prepayment penalties?

Many lenders will impose fees if you decide to pay off your loan early. Others won't. Make sure you know which way the company stands from the beginning.

Is it better to go with financing through the dealership or elsewhere?

This can often be a toss-up. Dealers might offer packages that appear attractive on the surface, but have attached terms that aren't so great. Some might offer cash rebates as an alternative to low interest rates. If possible, one should try to qualify for these rebates while going with outside financing to gain the best of both worlds.

What if I want to purchase a bike from the classifieds?

This can widen your range of choices, and maybe even save you some money. However, make sure the lender you're looking at accepts private-party loans.

When it comes to purchasing a new bike, choosing the right lender can be just as important as the bike itself. After all, getting hit with fees left and right can seriously dampen your riding enjoyment-and no one wants that!
